As part of a technical communication class, I worked as part of a team of five to develop a solution to a problem we saw in our local community. We chose to focus on improving the Atlanta high school graduation rate. We hypothesized students were more reluctant to finish high school and continue to college because they did not feel personaly invested or interested in any of their school classes. Coming from a technical background, we chose to focus on how to get students more interested in STEM fields at an early age in an effort to encourage this investment in education after high school.

STEM programs have been implemented in some local schools, but they found limited success. To further develop these programs, we researched the addition of the Arts to STEM, making STEAM. The inclusion of art opens up a much wider variety of opportunities for young students to become involved and interested in what they are learning. We also encouraged sharing the growing interdisciplinarity of the Arts and STEM fields to show how finding a passion in just a single aspect of school can lead to even more future possibilites.
